Recycling Process

At Thorntons Recycling, we are committed to making recycling in Adelaide both efficient and rewarding. Here's how our streamlined process works:

1. Collection and Drop-Off

Customers bring their recyclable materials to our conveniently located depot at 4 Murray Street, Thebarton, just ten minutes from the Adelaide CBD. Our facility features a user-friendly drive-thru system, allowing for quick and hassle-free drop-offs.

For those seeking added convenience, our Direct Collect service provides home and business collection for large quantities of recyclable containers. This option offers a seamless and efficient recycling experience, ensuring you can still receive your recycling refund for eligible containers, even when using our collection service.

2. Sorting and Inspection

Upon arrival, our trained staff assist in unloading and pre-sorting items. We accept a wide range of materials, including:

  • Beverage Containers: Glass bottles, plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and cardboard cartons are eligible for South Australia's container deposit scheme.
  • E-waste: Proper disposal and recycling of electronic waste to prevent environmental contamination.
  • Scrap Metal: Recycling of various metals, contributing to resource conservation.
  • Batteries and Polystyrene: Safe recycling options for materials that require special handling.

Our team ensures that all items are free from contaminants, such as food residue or non-recyclable materials, to maintain the integrity of the recycling process.

3. Processing and Sorting

Once sorted, materials undergo further processing:

  • Beverage Containers: Containers are sorted by material type and colour. Glass is separated by colour, crushed, and sent to glass manufacturers for remelting. Plastics are categorised by resin type, shredded, and cleaned for reuse in new products. Aluminium cans are compacted and shipped to smelters for recycling.
  • E-Waste: Electronic items are dismantled to recover valuable components like metals and plastics, which are then processed for reuse.
  • Scrap Metal: Metals are sorted into ferrous and non-ferrous categories, cleaned, and melted down for manufacturing new metal products.

4. Environmental Compliance

Thorntons Recycling adheres to all local and national environmental regulations, ensuring that our processes minimise environmental impact. We continuously monitor and improve our methods to align with best practices in the recycling industry.

5. Community Engagement

Education is key to fostering a culture of sustainability. Thorntons actively engages with local schools, businesses, and community groups to promote recycling initiatives and environmental awareness. Our partnerships aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to make eco-friendly choices in their daily lives.

6. Customer Incentives

We offer competitive rates for recyclable materials, providing a financial incentive for individuals and businesses to participate in recycling efforts. Our efficient processes ensure quick transactions, making recycling both convenient and profitable.

7. Continuous Improvement

As part of our commitment to excellence, we regularly review and enhance our recycling processes. This includes investing in new technologies and training to ensure that we remain at the forefront of the recycling industry in Adelaide.

By choosing Thorntons Recycling, you contribute to a sustainable future for Adelaide, supporting a circular economy that benefits both the environment and the community.
